Background of the study
In today’s globalized economy, workplace diversity has become increasingly important. In Sapele, religious diversity within organizations is both a strength and a challenge. As employees from varied religious backgrounds work together, differences in beliefs and practices can lead to misunderstanding and, at times, discrimination. Workplace discrimination based on religious affiliation can negatively affect employee morale, productivity, and overall organizational culture. Research indicates that effective management of religious diversity is critical for fostering an inclusive work environment (Okechukwu, 2023). However, when organizations fail to manage these differences, conflicts may arise, leading to reduced cooperation and increased tension (Emeka, 2024). Recent studies further suggest that proactive diversity management strategies can mitigate such challenges (Ifeanyi, 2025). This study evaluates the impact of religious diversity on workplace discrimination in Sapele, exploring both the benefits of a multi-faith environment and the risks of bias and exclusion.

Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged benefits of religious diversity, workplace discrimination based on religious affiliation remains a persistent issue in Sapele. Employees from minority religious groups often encounter bias, unequal treatment, and reduced opportunities for career advancement. Although some organizations have implemented diversity policies, the effectiveness of these measures in addressing religious discrimination is questionable. The lack of comprehensive empirical research on the nexus between religious diversity and workplace discrimination impedes the development of robust, culturally sensitive interventions. This study aims to fill that gap by systematically evaluating the impact of religious diversity on discriminatory practices in the workplace.

Objectives of the study:

  • To evaluate the impact of religious diversity on workplace discrimination.
  • To identify discriminatory practices based on religious affiliation.
  • To recommend strategies for promoting inclusivity in the workplace.

Research questions:

  • How does religious diversity affect workplace discrimination in Sapele?
  • What forms of discrimination are most prevalent based on religious affiliation?
  • How can organizations effectively mitigate religious discrimination?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Greater religious diversity is significantly associated with increased instances of workplace discrimination.
  • H2: Employees from minority religious groups experience higher levels of discrimination.
  • H3: Implementation of diversity policies reduces the incidence of workplace discrimination.

Significance of the study
This study is crucial for highlighting challenges in managing religious diversity in the workplace. By identifying discriminatory practices and proposing inclusive strategies, the research offers actionable insights for employers and policymakers. The findings are expected to improve organizational harmony and productivity in Sapele, ultimately fostering a more equitable work environment (Adams, 2023).
